1 month ago I travelled to Sydney to do another Osteo course, offered by the Barral Institute. I really love their courses! They are a great anatomy review, really help me to think more osteopathically when it comes to treatment, and some of the assessment and techniques we learn are really valuable and powerful.
This course was called Neuromeningeal Manipulation 1: An integrated approach to Trauma, and it focused on identifying and treating restrictions and strains in the Neuromeninges. Lots of big words, hey! Basically, the assessment and techniques learnt in this course can help patients that have suffered physical trauma - be that from a car accident, whiplash disorder, concussions, falls, even sporting accidents. When a force is applied to the body, that force has to go somewhere.
During an Impact, the body wants to protect the brain and the nervous system, so the protective coverings (called the meninges) absorb these forces and store them in the tissues. These areas then become restrictions in the meninges, which the body has to compensate around. Restriction = increased Tension. Increased Tension = more pressure. More pressure = congestion in tissues, poor blood flow and reduced nutrition. The body then has to compensate around this restriction, and it will keep compensating until it can’t. This is where injury occurs.
It might sound a little drab, but where I get excited is figuring out how to apply this information, and which patients it could help. Are you one of those people, that has a niggling injury, that doesn’t get better? Or you have some treatment, it gets better for a little bit, but always comes back? It’s because the primary restriction hasn’t been addressed. If you’ve suffered from trauma, the restriction could be in the nervous system, and unless that restriction is released, the body will recompensate and the injury will come back.
I’ve already put this knowledge into practice and started helping patients who have been suffering from chronic problems. I’m excited to see how their treatment plans go, hoping that they will get longer lasting change and resolution to their injuries.
